Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common cause of dementia. The term dementia is defined as the loss of memory, intellectual and social abilities that are severe enough to interfere with normal daily functioning. With Alzheimer’s, healthy brain tissue degenerates causing a steady decline in mental abilities. As the disease progresses, work, hobbies, and social life are affected. Five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Alzheimer’s Disease is not a normal part of aging, but the risk of getting the disorder increases with age. Around 5 percent of people ages 65-74 have Alzheimer’s. Nearly half of people over 85 have the disease. Though there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, treatments may improve the quality of life for those suffering with the disease.
